KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WIBW) – The Kansas City Royals (1-1) evened its opening series of the 2025 campaign after defeating the Cleveland Guardians (1-1), 4-3.
After suffering an extra-innings defeat on Opening Day, the Royals recovered on Saturday, March 29. Kansas City was lifted by its offense in the seventh inning, which led to the victory.
Cleveland had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Maikel Garcia tied the game with a solo home run that ricocheted off the foul pole in left field, setting the game at 3-3. Bobby Witt Jr. broke the tie after sending a line drive down to left field, scoring Dairon Blanco and giving Kansas City a 4-3 advantage.
Kansas City reliever Lucas Erceg kept the Guardians off the board in the eighth inning, and Carlos Estévez (1) held the Royals lead in the ninth, earning his first save.
Kansas City would get win No. 1 in the 2025 season, 4-3.
Daniel Lynch IV (1-0) earned the win after replacing Seth Lugo in the sixth inning. Lynch threw two scoreless innings in the victory. Paul Sewald (0-1) took the loss for the Guardians.
At the plate for Kansas City, Salvador Perez went 2-4 with 2RBI. Garcia went 2-4 with a home run. Witt Jr. went 1-4 with an RBI.
The Royals and Guardians face off for one more game with the series on the line on Sunday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 P.M. CT.
