Uruguay will be desperate to snap their recent slump in form as they welcome Venezuela to Montevideo for a high-stakes Matchday 16 showdown in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at Estadio Centenario.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are without a win in their last four qualifiers, yet still cling to a spot in the all-important top six with just three games left to play. Uruguay vs Venezuela lineups

Injuries and Suspended players

Uruguay team news

There could be a shuffle in the backline, with Joaquin Piquerez pushing to start after replacing Mathias Olivera at the break in their last outing against Paraguay.

However, Bielsa faces a bigger headache up front. Darwin Nunez, Uruguay’s top scorer in this qualifying campaign with four goals, is suspended. Without their talisman, Uruguay must find new attacking solutions to end their three-game goal drought.

Venezuela team news

For Venezuela, veteran striker Salomon Rondon remains the go-to threat, having bagged five of La Vinotinto’s 15 goals so far. The 34-year-old will once again shoulder the burden of leading the line against one of South America’s traditional heavyweights.

In midfield, Jose Andres Martinez and Telasco Segovia have both impressed with their tireless work ethic and positional discipline, and manager Fernando Batista is likely to stick with the pair as Venezuela look to pull off a statement result on Uruguayan soil.

Game 66 lineups: Nats at Mets

0

NEW YORK – After a 2-4 homestand, the Nationals are back on the road for a quick trip to Citi Field to play three games against the Mets. The Nats are actually a respectable 15-17 on the road this season. But they’re only 3-7 in away games against their National League East rivals.

The Nats have the right man on the mound for tonight’s opener as they try to get back to their winning ways. MacKenzie Gore has been nothing short of excellent to start this season, with a 2.87 ERA, 1.142 WHIP and major league-best 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The lefty has only been charged with a total of three runs over his last four starts, including back-to-back shutout performances over 13 innings against the Mariners and Cubs.

But perhaps more important for the Nationals is what they do against the guy who takes the mound for the other team. Griffin Canning has been impressive to start his first year in New York. The veteran right-hander is 6-2 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.322 WHIP over his 12 starts. And he’s coming off an impressive six shutout innings with seven strikeouts against the Dodgers his last time out.

The Nats did make a roster move this morning to help the offense: They officially recalled Andrés Chaparro from Triple-A to take the roster spot of Nasim Nuñez, who was optioned to Rochester after Sunday’s game.

But wait, the Nationals weren’t done. They also claimed right-hander Ryan Loutos off waivers from the Dodgers this afternoon and optioned him to Rochester, filling the 40-man roster.

Fever’s Caitlin Clark ramping up for return but out Tuesday

0

Caitlin Clark will miss Tuesday’s game against the Atlanta Dream, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters Monday.

It will be the fifth consecutive game Clark has been out after suffering a quad strain May 24 against the New York Liberty. The team initially said on May 26 that she would be sidelined at least two weeks with the injury; it’s the first time she has missed game action across her collegiate and professional careers.

Clark said Thursday that, after being reevaluated over the weekend, she could possibly return for Tuesday’s tilt but that she would not rush back. White said on Monday that Clark is “ready to start ramping back up” and has been allowed to participate in some, but not all, of practice.

“We’re going to be smart, and we’re going to be cautious and we’re going to play the long game and work her back in very intentionally,” White said.

The same goes for Sophie Cunningham, who has been limited to just four games this season due to an ankle injury that she aggravated at the end of May. White said that Cunningham was also limited in Monday’s practice.

After facing Atlanta on Tuesday, the Fever don’t play again until Saturday, when they host the Liberty — giving the team ample practice time to see whether Clark and Cunningham are inching closer to their returns.

“I think for us, we’ve got to work both [Clark] and Sophie back into … are they in basketball condition, what does it mean to go live?” White said. “It’s one thing to do some shooting drills; it’s another thing to get out there on the floor, get back into movement patterns, rhythm, timing. [We’re] picking and choosing the things they can be in practice so we can see their progression.

“Both of them being out for long periods of time, you’ve got to work your way back into being game-ready.”

Indiana Fever vs. Atlanta Dream: Will Caitlin Clark play?

0

play

After being sidelined with an injury, Caitlin Clark has now reach the timeframe she was expected to be out. But all eyes are on whether she’ll play in the Indiana Fever’s next game.

Clark has been out for the past two weeks after she suffered a left quad strain during the Fever’s 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty on May 24. While it forced Indiana to play without their star player for four games, the team said Clark would be out for a minimum of two weeks, meaning she would be eligible to return for the Fever’s road game against the Atlanta Dream on June 10.

She’s able to play, but will Clark actually suit up?

The Fever will be without Clark for the team’s fifth consecutive game. Clark was ruled out of for Tuesday’s contest due to a left quadriceps strain she suffered in late May. Sophie Cunningham was also ruled out due to her right ankle.

Is Caitlin Clark playing Tuesday vs Atlanta Dream?

Despite the two-week time period being over, Clark will not play against the Dream on Tuesday. After Monday’s practice, Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters Clark is expected to miss her fifth consecutive game.

Caitlin Clark injury update

Even though Clark returned to practice, White said the team is still “going to be cautious” with her and make sure she’s fully ready to go before allowing her to play again. Indiana is also taking the same approach with injured guard Sophie Cunningham.

“It’s one thing to do some shooting drills. It’s another thing to get out there on the floor, get into movement patterns, rhythm, timing,” White said, according to the Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Sports Network. “So picking and choosing the things they can be in in practice, so we can see their progression. Both of them being out for long periods of time, you’ve got to work your way into being game ready.”

Clark said the previous week she wouldn’t “rush back if it’s not worth it” and it’s more of a day-to-day approach to determine whether she can return.

“It’s the type of injury, like, you don’t know,” Clark said. “When I wake up, I’ll feel different than the day before. We’ll see.”

The 2024 WNBA rookie of the year was unsure when her injury occurred in the game against the Liberty, but she said she knew it happened early in the game. She received an MRI after she had pain following the game, which revealed the left quad strain.

When will Caitlin Clark return to play?

With Clark ruled out against Atlanta, the next game she could possibly return is Saturday, June 14 at home against the Liberty, the same team against who she suffered the injury.

Indiana has gone 2-2 without Clark, including wins in its past two games. The Fever are 4-4 on the 2025 season.
