The LA Chargers brought back one of Justin Herbert’s most trusted weapons by signing Mike Williams to a one-year contract earlier this offseason. General manager Joe Hortiz may not be done adding former Chargers receivers, as there is one big name that is still on the market.
Keenan Allen is still a free agent and has been very clear about his desire to only play in Los Angeles or Chicago. The LA Rams and Chicago Bears are no longer realistic suitors for Allen, pointing him directly to the Chargers.
The Chargers have the cap space to re-sign Allen and it may just be a matter of time until he is once again in the powder blue. As if the stars weren’t aligning enough already, Williams added more fuel to the fire with his latest post on Instagram.
Williams posted a picture of him and Allen together on the Chargers with the caption, “run it back turbo”. The two wide receivers have stayed connected after departing the Chargers, even going to Disneyland together after Williams signed.
Mike Williams adds more fuel to Keenan Allen-Chargers fire
This is not the first time Williams has added fuel to the fire since re-joining the Chargers. In his introductory press conference after signing, the former first-round pick made it very clear he would love to play with Allen again in Los Angeles.
This is more than just a feel-good story and is something Chargers fans should be petitioning for. At this point, there isn’t a better wideout the Chargers can add to have an instant impact in 2025. Allen may be past his prime, but he is still a productive wideout.
Sure, there are some overlaps with him and Ladd McConkey both being best in the slot but that can be remedied. Slot-only specifications don’t matter as much in the modern game with so much pre-snap motion. Plus, the added impact Allen would add as a comfortable third down and red-zone target would more than make up and roster overlap.
Signing Allen doesn’t stop the Chargers from making other moves, either. Allen would simply serve as a short-term stopgap option. The Chargers can still draft a promising wideout early in the 2025 NFL Draft to have a long-term impact. It’s not an either-or situation.
Allen’s clear desire to return to the Chargers also lowers his price. The Chargers are naturally going to get a team-friendly contract if the veteran wideout is serious about only playing in Los Angeles or Chicago. Allen’s contract was already going to be affordable, this makes it even more palatable for the Bolts.
All signs are pointing to Allen returning. Allen wants it, Williams wants it, and most fans want it. The only question that remains is if the Chargers want it.
