Congresswoman tours detention facility amid overcrowding rumors, claims ‘they took people out’

Date:

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, was given a tour of the Krome Detention Facility on Thursday.

When she returned, Wilson said she saw a structure to accommodate the increasing number of people coming in.

“They did admit they are building a tent city,” she said. “It’s actually like a plexiglass or Styrofoam with big pipes of air conditioning coming in.”

Local 10 News has embedded with federal agents amid the crackdown on people in the country illegally and with criminal records.

Those arrested are then taken to federal facilities like Krome, but allegations have emerged about overcrowding in videos shared to social media.

“I did not witness that,” Wilson said, and without providing evidence, added, “They took people out today so I wouldn’t see it.”

She also lashed out against the detention of those without criminal records.

“Most of the people are not criminals,” she said.

But under U.S. code, a person is subject to deportation without documents or if they overstay a visa.

Local 10 News’ Janine Stanwood asked if Wilson and other members of Congress had the appetite to change that law.

“We have to convince the Republican Party, and I say that without any reservation,” Wilson replied.
