Braves third baseman Austin Riley exited Friday afternoon’s spring training game as a precaution after being hit on the right hand by a fastball. It is the same hand that Riley broke in August last season after being hit by a similar pitch.
Fortunately, Riley seemed to be OK in the immediate aftermath. He shook the hand a few times and was able to remove his protective elbow and shin gear with the hand. He was also able to do a grip strength test with the Braves training staff. Riley stayed in to run the bases but then departed in-between innings. He will likely undergo X-Rays just to be safe and confirm there isn’t a broken bone or additional damage.

Atlanta has already been victimized this spring by a fastball that cracked Sean Murphy’s ribs, forcing the catcher to likely miss the first week or two of the regular season. Shortly after Riley exited, the same pitcher nearly hit Orlando Arcia with an errant pitch.
UPDATE – X-rays on Riley’s hand came back negative. He will also undergo a CT Scan.
Riley’s X-ray was negative, he’ll now get a CT Scan on his right hand. Last year’s fracture was seen with the CT scan that followed a clean X-ray. Riley was unavailable to speak. The Braves said he already left the complex
